| From
Paris to Vancouver,
from Iowa City to Tel Aviv and Beijing, everywhere I have traveled, I
have
found a common underlying theme in the ambitions of the people I have
met.
No matter a person’s color or mother-tongue or situation in life, we
all
speak the same language when it comes to our most cherished desire.
Basically, we all
want to be happy.
We want to provide
well for ourselves
and our loved ones. We want to be able to laugh and retain that good
feeling
throughout the day. We want to feel at peace with ourselves,
comfortable
within our skin. We would like to put our hands to work on something
and
feel proud about the successful results. We would like other people to
think well of us, and to love us. We also want these good things for
the
people we care for, our family and friends.
A life of joy is the
universal human
goal.
Unfortunately, many
never achieve
it.
For many, life is an
eternal struggle.
They awake every morning with a sigh. They are reluctant to get out of
bed and face whatever lies ahead. That may be overwhelming tears, fear,
anger, shame, boredom, stress, lack, frustration, and strife at home,
at
work and every place in between. For these people, each day ends with a
joyless sigh that they have made it through their waking hours without
losing their sanity.
What a tragedy that
is. How sad it
is to slug through life and never know how full of passion and rich
with
pleasure each day can be.
